Northeast LRT Extension Uncertain

On July 2, 2024 a significant change to the Horse Hill Area Structure Plan was presented before Edmonton City Council at a Public Hearing. One change of particular concern was removal of the LTR right-of-way, replacing it with a “mass transit” route. Whereas the original plan ensured right-of-way for eventual extension of the LRT, the “mass transit” route on the amended plan is not compatible with LRT use due to sharp turns. This concern was raised by the Horse Hill Community league. The league’s conclusion that the proposed route is incompatible with LRT was not disputed.

Despite our Community League’s objections to the plan amendment, it was approved by Councilor Paquette and the rest of City Council with a vote of 12-0 in favor.

In follow-up with Councilor Paquette via email, he indicated that an LRT compatible route could be secured through the subdivision process. The Horse Hill community does not feel this is an appropriate approach, and that an LRT compatible right-of-way should be planned as part of the Area Structure Plan.
